PART THREE: pH in Advertising

In this part you will measure the pHs two different types of shampoo. Obtain a 2 mL sample of each using a calibrated plastic pipet, dilute with 50 mLs of distilled water and use the pH meter to determine the pH of each.

PART FOUR: Commercial Products Whose Action is Based on Neutralization

In this experiment you will test an antacid's ability to nutralize some 'excess' acid. Instead of using the pH meter to determine pH you will use litmus paper. Litmus paper is paper treated with an indicator which changes color in contact with an acid or a base. Red litmus turns blue in contact with a basic solution and blue litmus paper turns red in contact with an acidic solution.

You will also determine whether the gas generated when the antacid reacts with hydrochloric acid supports combustion.

Using a mortar and pestle crush an antacid tablet to form a powder.

Transfer the powdered antacid tablet to an 18 x 150 mm test tube

Transfer 2 ml of distilled water to the test tube containing the antacid powder.

Obtain some red and blue litmus paper and test the acidity of the antacid/water mixture. Use a stirring rod to obtain some of the mixture and transfer a few drops of the mixture to both pieces of litmus paper. Record your observations on page 5 - 10.

Obtain another piece of red and blue litmus paper and test the acidity of the dilute solution of hydrocloric acid. Record your results.

Measure 2 mLs of the hydrochloric acid solution and transfer it to the test tube containing the antacid/water mixture. Allow the reaction to proceed for a minute and then insert a lit match into the mouth of the test tube. Using a new lit match try test the effect of insereting it into the mouth of the test tube several times. Record your results.

PART FOUR: Leavening Ingredients

In last portion of this part of the experiment you will test baking soda and baking powder when added to water and when heated.

Weigh 1 gram each of baking soda and baking powder. Remember to weigh solids into the plastic weighing dish, not directly on the balance. Sometimes solids will get spilled during transfer. PLEASE clean up after you use the balance.

Transfer the each solid to an 18 x 150 mm test tube.

Add 4 mLs of distilled water to each tube and mix the contents. Record your observations.

Add 4 mLs of distilled water to each tube and mix the contents. Record your observations.

When there is no longer evidence of any change place both test tubes in a 100 mL beaker containing 60 mLs of distilled water. Place the beaker containing the water and test tubes on the hot plate in the hood for several minutes, and record your observations on the Results page.
