2006 Participant Information
Institute for Experienced AP Chemistry
Teachers
Oklahoma State University
June 12 - 16, 2006
If coming from Oklahoma City: Take Hwy 51 to Monroe travel north through campus
to the light at Hall of Fame and Monroe, continue north past Cowboy Mall. The
Jones Hall Suites are the residence building south of the Kerr Drummond dorms (high rise dorms).
Entrance to the parking area for the Jones Hall Suites is the second right, off Monroe street going south from Farm Road.
If coming from Tulsa on the Toll Road: Exit on Washington (177) from the Toll
Road and drive south past Airport Rd (a light), and past Lakeview Rd (a light).
Approximately 1 block south of Lakeview the road splits with the main road turning
left and Washington turning right. Stay on Washington and continue south past
McElroy (a light) to Hall of Fame (a light). At Hall of Fame turn right to Monroe
(a light) and then turn left, go south one block (Farm Road). Continue south and take the 2nd right turn (just north of the HES building) and continue west to Jones Suites. The Jones Hall Suites are the
residence buildings. There should be check-in at Jones Hall.
Parking (You'd better Read this!):
During the summer months no parking decals are required as long as visitors
use student commuter parking lots. For example, the lot around Jones Hall Suites
is a student commuter lot.
Housing and Meals:
Housing is in the Jones Hall Suites as described above. The housing we've
had in the past has been suite type housing with two individuals per suite (separate
bedrooms), and shared bath.
You may wish to bring an extra blanket as the dorms can be cool. Linens, pillows
and towels will be provided. Phones are in the room but you will need a calling
card to make long distance calls. There are also computer connections in these
rooms that will allow online access to the Internet.
You will be able to check-in Sunday afternoon at Jones Hall Office. The Check-in
desk is open noon to 9:00 pm on Sunday, June 11th, just indicate you are in
the AP Chemistry Institute. If you are not going to need housing please let
me know as-soon-as-possible. Those arriving on Sunday that would like to have
dinner together (Dutch treat) should meet outside room 155 in the Physical Sciences
building at 6:45 pm.
Meals will be served either in the Aggie Bread or the Market. Meal information
will be given at check-in. Meals will be covered
beginning Monday morning through Friday lunch. A plastic 'credit' card will
be issued when you check-in for meals and building access.
There will probably be the standard disclaimer about loss of
personal items due to theft...so be advised!
Institute Classes:
The morning classes are scheduled from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm in Physical Sciences
(PS) room 453. This room has moveable tables so there should be space to 'spread'
out a little. The afternoon session are scheduled from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm in
PS256. Goggles will be provided for all laboratories. In laboratory you must
wear proper attire, long pants and closed-toed shoes, for the laboratory period
each afternoon. Friday is a morning session only.
For more details on the schedule go here.
Graduate Credit:
Arrangements are being made with the Graduate College to
offer graduate credit for the Institute. I expect a maximum of
2-credit hours of CHEM 5220 will be possible. Information for
enrollment as a Special Student in the Graduate College at OSU
can be found here.
To enroll you will need to complete an application for admission
and return it to the Graduate College. There is a $25 application
fee (nonrefundable). The college needs approximately 30 days to
complete the application process. Tuition information can be
found here.
OSU is pretty 'tuned-in' so you may be able to complete all
applications through the Internet. Check the link above.
What to Bring and what you will get:
I suggest you bring a calculator and a laboratory coat if you like. We will
provide you with a three ring binder containing lecture materials and laboratory
experiments. This year we plan to provide each participant with a CD containing
LOTS of resources. We will have at least one book suitable for an AP course
and more likely two or three for everyone. We will have several odds and ends
which we will probably distribute via a drawing. If you want to bring any materials
to share with the other teachers do it! We do not have time schedule for sharing
but I'm sure we can work something out (probably in the evening.) If you plan
to bring any materials for sharing please let us know ASAP so we can prepare
copies for each partcipant.
