Oklahoma State University

This is ACA # 18. It is OK to use your textbook or lecture notes from class, but if you can answers the questions without it that is OK too.

Do not press the RETURN or ENTER key while you are answering these questions. Your browser will interpret either the same as clicking on the Submit key.

Answer all of the questions below. If you do not know an answer enter CNA. However, it will help me the most if you answer each question with your best intuition/idea about what would be a reasonable answer.

The ACA must be completed by Wednesday, October 28, 2010 at midnight or it will not count towards your ACA total.

Laboratory Section:

1. Answer each of the following;

a) Which shell in the hydrogen atom is at higher energy: n = 1, n = 4 or n = 6?

b) An electron in which of the following shells requires the least amount of energy to remove it from the atom (ionization): n = 1, n = 4 or n = 6?

c) Calculate the energy required to remove an electron from the n = 6 energy level?

Joules

2. Does the 1st ionization energy increase, decrease or remain constant as we go down in the Group I elements?

In terms of Coulomb's law (BCE#17) briefly explain this trend.

3. For the following pairs of elements, which has the higher first ionization energy (check out BCE17 if you do not remember from our lecture discussion).

a) F or Ne

Briefly explain why.

b) F or Cl

Briefly explain why.

4. Is there anything about the questions that you feel you do not understand? List your concerns/questions.

5. If there is one question you would like to have answered in lecture, what would that question be?
