  • HELP Session! Wednesday, 7:00 pm, PS141.
  • A few students (we'll find out tomorrow how many) are having some problems with the PLE. The message you receive is " There is a major problem. The PLE database does not recognize you. Your responses have been recorded into a SCRATCH database. Note the time you did this PLE and Contact Dr. Gelder." Inorder to diagnose this problem I need to better understand what you were doing at the time. So if you get this message send me an e-mail. I'm saving the responses to a SCRATCH file but there are NO names on the responses. How to avoid this problem?! Before doing the a PLE be absolutely sure that you see your name on your Personal web Page at the top of the left hand frame, and you see your name in the PLE form itself. If either are missing DO NOT DO THE PLE until you have re-logged in to your Personal Web page. The issue has to do with how much time you are on your personal web page and nothing is happening. If you have been logged on to your personal web page for a while, and done nothing it may have timed out, so it no longer knows who you are. Be careful before doing the PLE!

  • The PLE page is now back up after re-storing from a backed-up file saved Saturday evening. If you accessed either PLE1 or PLE2 between 10 pm on 1/18/03 to 9 pm 1/20/03 I have no record of you doing the PLE(s). So you will have to repeat them. Beginning with PLE3 no more mister Nice-Guy...not done before lecture...I will not count it as complete. BTW PLE3 is ready and waiting.
  • I've received messages from a number of you asking about the loss of some of your PLE information. I am in the process of trying to determine exactly what is going on. Somehow the database has been purged of the data from PLE#1. I will meet with the database administrator to find out what the problem is. Do not worry I have all of the data backed up and I will recreate the data after talking to Dr. Materer. I should have all this completed sometime today.
  • To the student who came by my office Friday morning after class asking about a lost key. I have a key that was found in PS141. Send me a message to see if we can arrange a time for you to check it out.
  • I've modified the coding in the PLE so if you accidently submit your responses before you are finished, you can click on the BACK button and finish the PLE and re-submit. All that will happen is the set of responses already in the database will be over-written by the new set. You will get a message telling you that is what happened. I always recommend you print out your PLE. You can bring it to class and incorporate it into your lecture notes.
  • I have Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's lecture posted at the QuickTime Video/Lectures link (see the left-hand frame on this page)
  • I have the HELP feature working for problem 3 and 4 on the RPS. Check it out. One caveat...I'm only comparing answers within a 4% error. It is possible to have an answer that is close to the correct answer, but have worked the problem incorrectly. This is not likely, but it can happen in some kinds of problems. Use this HELP feature carefully.
  • In our staff meeting today Lisa mentioned that she could not find the Hf for HCN(aq) or for CN-(aq). I've looked those values up and they are 105 kJ mol-1 and 151 kJ mol-1 respectively.
  • Also in staff meeting it was mentioned that some students did not have an element in RPS8a part v) on the Review Problem Set. If that is the case go to your Personal Web page. You can get the missing element there. Copy it on to your Review Problem Set or print a new copy.
  • This semester I want to try using personal web pages. To take advantage of this new feature you will have to give me a Secret Identification number or name. Go to the SID#/Name link in the left frame and complete the information requested. After you have given me your SID information you will be able to access your own personal CHEM 1515 Web page through the Personal Page. The personal page will have information specifically associated with you: grades, PLE's, homework, exams, plus other way cool stuff. So get your SID set up now!
      • Since this is the FIRST time I have tried to use the Personal Web Page concept there are going to be problems. You must e-mail me, or contact me when you have problems so I can solve them quickly. Hang in there, it is going to be FUN! this semester.
  • You will need your individualize copy of the Review Problem Set before you go to Laboratory this week. After submitting your SID information go to your Personal Page and click on the Problem Set link. There you will be able to obtain your own Review Problem Set. If you have any questions contact Dr. G.
  • Here are this semester's laboratory sections. Be sure to bring your textbook and a calculator to laboratory this week! Yes! Labs are meeting this week (1/13/02 - 1/17/03).

  • Check out the link to the web site for our textbook (BLB). The link is near the top of the left frame on our web site. Clicking on the link will take you to a page with an image of our textbook. Near the top of the page is a dropdown menu listing the Chapters in the text. Select a chapter and a page will be loaded for that chapter that contains links to resources. If you would like some practice problems try the Problem Soving Center. When the Problem Center page is load scroll down to the red button under flexible questions. Select the Homework link. This will generate a set of questions from the chapter. You will need a calculator.

  • Here is a very nice Periodic Table that contains lots of physical properties and chemical properties for the elements.
