6.2. Apply the ideal gas law to relate and calculate values for pressure, volume, temperature, and amount of a gas.

The volume of 1 mol of various gases at 0 degrees C (273 K) and 1 atm is shown in the table on the right.

(These conditions are indicated as STP for Standard Temperature and Pressure)

 

 

 

 

As can be seen these values vary, but only slightly. An average value for these and other known gases at STP is about 22.4 L. Chemists consider this value as valid for the volume of a hypothetical gas that is called an ‘ideal’ gas.
