I have some interesting data on exam averages and number of PLEs and ACAs completed. For the first exam period you did 6 PLEs and 6 ACAs. Look at the table below to see the connection between number of PLEs and ACAs completed and exam average. Remember the class average on Exam I was 60. I have even more interesting correlations between questions on specific ACAs and exam questions, that I am working on right now.

PLE#8 and ACA#8 are both available on your Personal Page. You will need a calculator for this ACA. After completing PLE#8 and reviewing the sample problems worked out in the lecture notes on Thursday, September 13, 2007 you may be able to finish PS#3. Be sure to pick up PS#4, it is now available on your Personal page.
I've changed my mind. The remaining problems on PS#3 will be due, Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the beginning of class. I need to do at least one more formula problem to prepare you to do the remaining problems on PS#3.
The average for Exam I is 60. The high score was a 98. Two students received that score. These students will receive some swag tomorrow at the beginning of class. Congratulation, this is a great average for the first exam. You all worked hard and it shows!! Grades are posted. If anything appears strange when you access your grades you should e-mail me your concerns. Most important!! If you are concerned about your performance in this class I would be more than happy to talk to you about your grades. Please wait until you get your exam so we have it to look at when we meet.
- There have been some minor changes in the Chemistry graduate student Tutoring schedule in PS105. Check the link on the CHEM 1314 web page (not your Personal Page) titled Free Tutoring for a copy of the new Tutoring Schedule.
- This week's laboratory is Experiment #2 (check your Assignment Page on your Personal Page). The pre-lab for this experiment is in your laboratory manual. Complete the pre-lab BEFORE you go to Lab.
- REMEMBER to complete the pre-lab activity Experiment #2 for the week of September 10, 2007. You will need a calculator for this activity. DO NOT forget you must wear approved eye protection in laboratory this week.
- Podcasts for the first two weeks of lecture are available. Also check the podcasts for sample exams and help on problem sets. If you need information on how to access the podcasts check this link.
- Still having some issues with significant figures and conversions? There are two podcasts where I go over in great detail problems similar to those on the problem set #1. Check it out! Check out the Description to see which podcast discusses which concepts.
- Here are some questions that were posted on ACA#1 from students and my responses. I'll try to answer more and post them here. Have more questions? Ask away.
- If you are in Section 18 and have a conflict with the 8:30 - 10:20 am time please send me an e-mail with the number of the lab section (14 - 21) that works best with your schedule.
- Welcome to CHEM 1314 Fall, 2007. I hope everyone is as excited about the beginning of the semester as the teaching assistants and I.
- The
first thing you need to do to access materials for this class is to complete
the Secret Identification (SID) form. Click on the SID#/Name link in the left
frame and complete the form. You will receive an e-mail from Dr. G. indicating
your SID has been accepted. Once you have entered an SID, fill out the additional
form for some extra credit, and then you can go to your Personal page.
On your Personal Page check out the Assignment Page (what is happening in
class), and get your personal Problem Set #1. Do not worry about the PLE or
ACA, I'll discuss those in class on Tuesday. Here is a QuickTime movie of the login procedure, if you would like to watch that (NOTE: this example is from CHEM 1515, so just be aware of that difference).
- Remember laboratory
meets this week. By the 3rd week of classes you will be expected to wear safety
goggles all the time you are in laboratory. A graduate
student will visit your laboratory to sell inexpensive safety googles during
the 2nd week of classes.
- Do you have
iTunes (version 7)? Are you downloading any podcasts? (Note you do not need
a video iPod or a Mac to subscribe to the video podcasts.) Inquiring minds
want to know...actually I do. If you do not have iTunes (which you need to
subscribe to a podcast) on your computer checkout the Apple
iTunes download web site. To access the General Chemistry Fall 2007 Podcast
click on the podcast information link in the left frame. Check out the videos
on problem solving, they may help on your Problem Sets and Exams. I also have
a sample exam discussion on the podcast.
