CHEM 1314 Fall 2015 Annoucements

PS9 is now available on your Personal Page.
ACA21 and BCE21 are now available on your Personal Page. You will need a calculator for the ACA21. I recommend doing ACA21 as it will help for the remaining problems on PS9.
I have provided a link to the TOLT activity on the main frame of your Personal Page. Please try to complete this activity in the next week. Let me know if you encounter any technical challenges with completing this activity.
New grades are posted. Exam II score (average for Exam II is 54), corrected ACAs and BCEs (now including Exam II ACAs and BCEs), grades through PS6 and Lab 4, and SI session attendance (1st 6 weeks). Email me if you have any questions. Be safe over the break.

If you would like to discuss your current grade in CHEM 1314 we can setup an appointment. For that appointment you should bring your class notes, your Exam I, your DCI Workbook, and any other resources that you are using for the class.
Exams are returned during (next) laboratory. Look over your exam, if you would like any question(s) regraded, you MUST return your exam to your TA BEFORE leaving laboratory. Be sure to indicate which question(s) you would like reviewed. DO NOT bring your exam directly to Dr. Gelder.
CONGRATULATIONS!! New grades are posted with your Exam I score. The class average on the Exam is 56. The overall course average is 60%. We will talk about how this compares to previous Fall semester starts in class today. BTW, there is class today, talking about moles and formulas of compounds. Be sure to complete the ACA and the BCE (they will earn you free points!!).
For the nomenclature topics we are covering you must know (memorize) the contents of Tables 3.3, 3.4 (not the older names), 3.5 and the prefixes listed in Figure 3.8 in Tro. This also connects with the spelling of the first 20 elements and those additional elements.
I have been in contact with members of the Chemistry Department's Safety Committee and I've been told that sleeveless tops are not appropriate clothing for the chemistry laboratory. Shortsleeves are allowed.

SI Session schedule is now posted on your Personal Page. Look for the SI schedule link in the left frame just above the Problem Set link. SI Sessions begin this evening. Be sure you have your CWIDs with you as that is how attendence is taken.
Another place to go for significant figures would be to look at video lectures from 2014. From your Personal Page click on the 'Here are our class lectures on video' link and scroll to the Fall, 2014 class videos. Read the brief summary to determine the video that you would want to watch. Remember it will take a moment to load since the files are large.

The first thing you need to do to access materials for CHEM 1314 is to complete the Secret Identification (SID) form. Click on the SID#/Name link in the left frame and complete the form. Once you have entered an SID, fill out the additional form for some extra credit, and then you can go to your Personal page. You will receive an e-mail from Dr. G. indicating your SID has been accepted. On your Personal Page check out the Assignment Page (what is happening in class), and get your personal Problem Set #0 and #1 at the Problem Set link. Do not worry about the BCE or ACA, I'll discuss those in class on Tuesday.
Remember laboratory meets this week, beginning Monday, August 24, 2015. By the 2nd week of classes you will be expected to wear safety goggles all the time you are in laboratory. A graduate student will visit your laboratory to sell inexpensive safety googles.
SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY.....remember all the safety rules that were discussed during the first week of classes. If you are not dressed appropriately you are likely to be told to return home to change. A missed laboratory is recorded as a 0. Be careful!
Here is a cool Periodic Table with lots of video that I will use in class. This site will help you do PS1.1. NOTE: You will not be able to access this page if you are off campus. It will only work when you are using a campus IP address.
