Unit 9: Applications of Thermodynamics
Topic 9.1 Introduction to Entropy
Here are some introductory lecture notes on Entropy that may be useful.
Topic 9.2 Absolute Entropy and Entropy Change
Topic 9.3 Gibbs Free Energy and Thermodynamic Favorability
Topic 9.4 Thermodynamic and Kinetic Control
Topic 9.5 Free Energy and Equilibrium
Topic 9.6 Coupled Reactions
Topic 9.7 Galvanic (Voltaic) and Electrolytic Cells
Galvanic/Voltaic Cell Simulation This simulation was developed by Dr. Tom Greenbowe (University of Oregon) and can be used to construct several different Voltaic cells for the investigation of cell potential.
This is an activity investigates the electrical properties of chemical reactions by measuring the emf of a variety of chemical reactions.
Topic 9.8 Cell Potential and Free energy
Topic 9.9 Cell Potential Under Nonstandard Conditions
Concentration Cell Simulation This simulation was developed by Dr. Tom Greenbowe (University of Oregon) and can be used to construct several different Voltaic cells with metal ion concentrations that are nonstandard for the investigation of how the cell potentialis effected.
This is an activity that investigates how concentration influences the electrical properties of chemical reactions by measuring the emf of a concentration cell.
Topic 9.10 Electrolysis and Faraday's Law
Electrolytic Cell Simulation This simulation was developed by Pearson Publishing with the assistantce of Dr. John Gelder (Oklahoma State University), Dr. Micheal Abraham (University of Oklahoma) and Dr. Tom Greenbowe (University of Oregon)can be used to construct several different electrolysis cell for the investigation of how current, time and charge can impact the amount of metal plated out on a cathode.
An activity can be used to explore all these variables and to invent Faraday's constant.
