  • The Web Survey is now posted on your PLE page. If you complete the survey before Friday, December 15, 2006 I will enter 12 points for PS22.

  • Exam 4 and 5 Help! Session, Monday, December 11, 2006 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in PS141.

  • Final Exam ROOM ASSIGNMENTS: Sections 16, 18, 19, 21 and 22 will take their final in PS141. Sections 17, 20 and 23 will take their final in NRC 106. So Kerry and Kim's students are in PS141 and Qing's students are in NRC 106.

  • I've posted new grades from all the TAs, and new grade predictions. I've also posted a podcast review for Exam #3 for this semester. Today's Help Session was taped. I hope to have the podcast posted as soon as I return from Dallas. Answers to PS#13 are posted also.

  • I've got the podcast for Tuesday, November 28, 2006 and for Tuesday, December 5, 2006 posted. Remember, sample Exam IV and Exam V are posted on your Assignment Page in Week 17.

  • Summary of what is due and when:
  • Based on how far we got on Tuesday's lecture, the sample problems in the PowerPoint on Gases, and the lecture notes posted on the Assignment Page I will expect PS14.1 - PS14.6 and PS14.8 to be completed. We will not grade PS14.9, but I recommend you attempt it, as least as much as you can do. While a challenging problem, just remember it is a limiting reagent problem. NOTE: PS#14 should be turned in by Friday, December 8, 2006 at 4:00 pm in PS201.

  • Ok..lots of weather problems and cancelled classes...for TWO DAYS! So with regard to laboratory. Kerry and I really need everyone to do last week's laboratory. Kerry needs the information we can gather from your written lab reports for her masters thesis. So students in section 18 (Tuesday evening), 21 (Thursday), 22 and 23 (Friday) will all do the Gas Pressure Sensor experiment during the check out period. In last Tuesday's lecture I had indicated that the 13th experiment would be completed outside of class during the week of December 4th. With the canceling of classes I think the best option will be to make the following offer with regard to that experiment....EXTRA CREDIT!...The experiment on gas laws (posted on your Assignment Page) for the week of Dec 4 will be an extra credit assignment. I'll have more information posted on the Assignment Page, just understand it will be graded, and evaluated with the usual rigor....so you will not receive credit if the experiment is poorly done. So watch out. So the laboratory component of the CHEM 1314 for this semester will be based on the highest 10 out of twelve laboratory experiments. With regard to PS13, that will now be due on Thursday, December 7th by 5:00 pm. We will see at the end of lecture on Tuesday just how far on PS14 I can expect you to complete. Can anyone think of any other issue?

  • PLE#25 is now available. PS#13 and PS#14 are also available. I recommend bringing PS#13 and PS#14 to class on Thursday, November 30, 2006.

  • I have posted a grade prediction for your final grade on your Personal Page. The Grade Prediction page lists your three exam grades, and provides projected points in lab (max 150 pt) and PS (max 200 pt). The lab and PS projected numbers are based on the grades that I have received from your TA to date. These five scores are subtracted from the points needed for a possible grade to determine how many points you need to earn on Exam IV and V to earn that particular grade. Check it out. If you have questions send me an e-mail.

  • Exam III scores are posted. The exam average is 54.7. The high score was a 98, earned by a new top student. Swag in class on Thursday. Way to go...the exam average increased. Right now the overall course average is 62.5%...an overall average of 65% would be the ideal average! Looking good. SO check your grades...any problems? contact your TA and me. See you in class on Thursday...more cool Lewis structures.

  • PS#12 is available on your Personal Page. Get it so you can bring it to class on Thursday, November 16, 2006.

  • Remember Exam 3 is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, 2006 beginning at 5:30 pm. Check your Personal Page for the correct room. It will be the same room as your first and second hour exam.

  • The podcasts are up-to-date through Thursday, November 9, 2006. I also added a podcast reviewing some of the problems on PS10. You may find the discussion of these problems helpful as you complete PS11 and prepare for Exam #3.

  • Exams are graded and new grades are posted. The average was 52 and the high score was a 97. WOW! Swag on Thursday, plus more thermochemistry and we will begin a new Chapter! See you in class.

  • The average for Exam 1 is 56.5, not bad. The high score was a 94. The high score will receive a special certificate in class tomorrow, a chemisty bumper sticker and some other swag. NEat stuff. All the grades that I have are posted. Most sections have at least one PS and one Lab grade. Exam 1 scores are also posted. If your grades do not appear let me know. This is usually because of a bad SID. If you started your SID with a zero, your scores will not appear, so let me know. What was your letter grade on the exam? Remember the course distibution: A (85%) : B (75%) : C (55%) : D (40%). Anyone who is concerned about their performance please drop by and see me in my office. I will be happy to review your exam and make recommendations to help your next exam score. The class average is not to far off from other semester averages.

  • Be sure you have your CHEM 1314 Lab manual before going to lab. They are available at Cowboy Book and the Book Trader if the SU is out. If you do not have your lab manual it will be your responsibility to have a copy of the laboratory experiment before you can begin the laboratory. Also wear appropriate clothing to lab.

  • OK NEW EXAM SCHEDULE FOR CHEM 1314 SECTION 16 - 23!!!
  • I have also posted Tuesday's lecture as a podcast. If you need some assistance on accessing the video podcasts for our class you can find a brief help file here. Check out the videos on problem solving, they may help on your Problem Sets and Exams. I also have sample exam discussion podcasts posted for each CHEM 1314 exam. Do you have an idea of a podcast that would help you in CHEM 1314? Let me know.

  • Do you have iTunes (version 6)? Are you downloading any podcasts? (Note you do not need a video iPod or a Mac to subscribe to the video podcasts.) Inquiring minds want to know...actually I do. If you do not have iTunes (which you need to subscribe to a podcast) on your computer checkout the Apple iTunes download web site. To access the General Chemistry Spring 2006 Podcast, open iTunes and select Advance Menu Option. Pick the Subscribe to Podcast and enter the address http://introchem.chem.okstate.edu/rssF06.xml into the dialog box. This will subscribe you to the CHEM 1314 Video Podcast. You may select which videos you would like to download. Check out the videos on problem solving, they may help on your Problem Sets and Exams. I also have a sample exam discussion on the podcast. NOTE: The address for the Spring 2006 podcasts is http://introchem.chem.okstate.edu/rssSP06.xml. The address for the Fall 2005 podcasts is http://introchem.chem.okstate.edu/rss.xml

Check out the link to the web site for our textbook (BLB). The link is near the top of the left frame on our web site. Clicking on the link will take you to a page with an image of our textbook. Near the top of the page is a dropdown menu listing the Chapters in the text. Select a chapter and a page will be loaded for that chapter that contains links to resources. If you would like some practice problems try the Problem Solving Center. When the Problem Center page is loaded scroll down to the red button under flexible questions. Select the Homework link. This will generate a set of questions from the chapter. You will need a calculator.

Here is a very nice Periodic Table that contains lots of physical properties and chemical properties for the elements.

  • WANT SOME ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS TO PRACTICE IN PREPARATION FOR EXAM I? Check out the Student Access Kit in the Media Pak that was shrink-wrapped with your textbook. Follow the instructions for registering that are provided in the Student Access Kit to logon to the Prentice Hall web site. When you are registered checkout the Practice Problems I and II. Also check out the a link to another 'older' web site for Brown, LeMay and Bursten which has even more problems to practice on. Click on the Jump to... dropdown menu list near the top of the web page. There are a set of more interesting problems at the second web site. HAVE FUN!!!

  • Remember for laboratory, no open-toed footwear, and no shorts. You will be expected to wear safety goggles all the time you are in laboratory.
  • Here are some quick responses to the last question on ACA#4 (If you could ask one question...).
  • Here are some quick responses to the last question on ACA#2 (If you could ask one question...).

  • If you have not yet purchased your textbook (and even if you have) you might consider whether you would prefer an electronic version of the textbook rather than a hard copy version. This option may work for some of you. The catch? It is priced approximately half of the cost of the hard copy version of the textbook. The electronic version of Brown, LeMay and Bursten is now available. You can also check the OSU Bookstore web site for details.
