  • Hey, anyone out there want to win an iPod?..the way cool mp3 player by Apple. This opportunity is only available to OSU students. Check out the web site with the information. If anyone has questions get in touch with me, and let me know if you are interested I may be able to help. I just got this information this afternoon, so get over to the SU Bookstore and Kara in the back of the store.
  • Gary Swantner and Danny Holderman are doing a Review Session in preparation for Exam II on Tuesday, October 14th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm in ES317 (our classroom). Students not in Gary or Danny's sections are welcome.
  • I have a few problems from PS7 that you can check using the HELP! feature from the Problem Set link on your Personal Web page.
  • PLE#19 is ready.
  • OK some students pointed out a few mistakes on PS#7.
    • mistake #1 on PS7.8....the units on the heat of vaporization and the heat of fusion for ethyl alcohol should be J g-1 not J ˚C-1;
    • mistake #2 on PS7.9....(in the 2nd sentence) Calculate the heat released/absorbed .....I'd left off the word released. Depending on the compound in the problem heat may be released to the water, or absorbed from the water;
    • mistake #3 on PS7.7a and 7.7b....(the units on the mass of steam, in 7a and the units on the mass of ice in 7b are missing. They are both grams.
    • this one is not a mistake (#4), it is memory failure...PS7.1b. I have provided a list of substances and their specific heats in a table that you can access from the Database link on our web site. I'd made it up a while ago, but forgot to link it there....oops!
  • Lab information for this week is available at your personal assignment page. Students in Section 10 - 15 and 19 need to do the onLine PLabE (pre-laboratory questions) before going to laboratory. All other sections should complete the pre-lab questions in the laboratory manual.
  • PLE#18 is ready. This PLE has a Flash animation so it will not work in the Library. You will need a calculator for this experiment.
  • Several of the TA's have given me updated grades so I've posted those to your personal page. I've also sent a note to request updated grades, so if there are no changes in yours, there should be shortly.
  • Students in Sections 10, 17, 18 and 20 have a laboratory assignment the week of September 29th. Go to your assignment page on your personal page to see what you must do for laboratory (week 7). Students in Sections 11 - 16 and 19 do not have laboratory this week. However I strongly advise you to do the laboratory simulaton. Check your personal asignment page for details.

  • Found in ES317 after class on Wednesday, September 24th: 1 calculator, 1 pair of sun glasses and 1 carabiener. Claim in my office.

  • With 10 sections entered the exam average is 56 and the high score is a 98. You will get your exams back in laboratory beginning Thursday, September 11th. When your TA returns your exam look it over. If you have any questions and would like us to re-grade a question on your exam write a brief note and return the exam to your TA. We will look at the exam in our next staff meeting. If you are satisfied with your exam you may keep it. After you take the exam from your lab room I will NOT change the grade!
  • Be sure to check what you must complete BEFORE attending laboratory this week. Go to your Assignment Page.
  • Your TA's e-mail address is below.

  • Check out the link to the web site for our textbook (BLB). The link is near the top of the left frame on our web site. Clicking on the link will take you to a page with an image of our textbook. Near the top of the page is a dropdown menu listing the Chapters in the text. Select a chapter and a page will be loaded for that chapter that contains links to resources. If you would like some practice problems try the Problem Solving Center. When the Problem Center page is loaded scroll down to the red button under flexible questions. Select the Homework link. This will generate a set of questions from the chapter. You will need a calculator.

  • Here is a very nice Periodic Table that contains lots of physical properties and chemical properties for the elements.
