Acid and Base Classifications and Identification
In this activity you will investigate the reactivity
of seven
solutions (labeled A - G) with three different indicators
(litmus, bromothymol blue and phenophthalein) and
three reagents [Mg, CaCO3 and Mg(NO3)2].

You will observe the interaction of each of the solutions
A - G with the indicators and the reagents by watching
video clips of the reactions. For each video clip you watch
you will write a brief summary of your observations.
At the end of each set of reactions you will summarize
the behavior you observed of the seven unknown solutions
as either acid, base or neutral.
Your goal is to determine a pattern in the reactivity of each
of the solution so that you organize the seven solutions into
groups based on their reactivity.
In the table below are links to pages that include the video
clips and the fields where you can record your observations.
At the bottom of each page is a field for you to record the
patterns you observed of the reactivity of the seven solutions.
When you have responded to all the questions on the page
there is a Submit button. When you click on the Submit button
your observations will be recorded to a database and a new
page will be loaded where all of your responses will be typed.
You should print this page and keep it as part of your laboratory
notebook. At the top of each page you must enter your first
name, your last name and your section number.
The order you perform the experiments is up to you, however
it is recommended you begin with litmus paper and finish with
Mg(NO3)2. At anytime you are encouraged to make metal
predictions on how each solution will behave with each indicator
and reagent. Successful predictions will mean you have
determined an important pattern.
