Limitations of The Arrhenius Theory:

When we write the equation describing how a substance
behaves as an Arrhenius acid. we represents the proton
as H+(aq). For example:
HI(aq)
H+(aq) + I-
(aq). The free hydrogen cation
H+, doesn't exist in water solutions as a free proton H+
due to the high charge density, the proton will associate
itself with one or more water molecules. When the
proton is associated with one water molecule we
represent that formula as H3O+(aq).

Ammonia is a base , even though it contains no OH- ions,
but it turns the red litmus paper blue, the Arrhenius
theory did not account for the bascity of ammonia.
- Arrhenius theory only applies to solution reactions.
